Ila was diagnosed with a Grade 2 brain tumour two days after experiencing her first seizure which happened about 10 minutes after blowing out the candles at her “off to uni” party. Several scans and a month later, she underwent 8 hours of brain surgery at the Mayo Rochester. Her left arm was paralysed immediately after surgery but regained full functionality a few months later. 18 months later, she started having regular seizures and was told tumour related epilepsy would be a life long condition. She knew the tumour would grow back in 5 years and require further surgery - most probably awake - radiation and chemotherapy. 

Ila didn’t have an easy life, and her brain tumour diagnosis days before she was due to start university certainly contributed to that. Being 19 and coping with a tumour was incredibly difficult for her and very isolating – the prognosis wasn’t great and she knew it was incurable.  She faced further brain surgery – awake – chemotherapy and radiation as well as life- long seizures.   Having addiction, epilepsy related to the tumour and anxiety is unfortunately too much for many, but when coupled with something like brain cancer it makes seeing the light at the end of the tunnel that much harder. 

We’ll never know how Ila’s life might have been different given better brain tumour treatments, but I know that it would have made it far more manageable.  We hope the money raised from this charity fundraiser helps research which in turn eases someone else suffering from a brain tumour.

Ila died in October 2017 aged 21 from an accidental overdose. This MotorMouth event, raced by her siblings as “Team Scheck”, would have meant the world to her.
