Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page and thank you to those who have shown incredible support over the last 4 years.
Four years ago (when he was 15) Tom was told he has Stargardt’s disease. It was a huge shock. Stargardt’s is progressive, usually diagnosed in childhood and affects the central vision resulting in loss of the ability to read, watch TV, recognise faces, drive etc as cells at the back of the eye die - similar to Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Tom is now 19 and studying at university despite these obstacles. Sadly, there is no treatment or cure. We are raising money for vital research into drug, gene and stem cell therapy. These treatments are currently in human trials for the treatment of Stargardt's and AMD. Moorfield's Hospital tell us there is a lot of promising research being done and breakthroughs are being made. It's possible, with your support, that Tom will receive a treatment in his lifetime.
There are 6,000 people in the UK and 30,000 in the USA living with Stargardt’s. People living with Macular Degeneration exceeds 600,000 in the UK and over 10 million in the USA. This is a concern which hospitals and medical institutes are collaborating on globally.
Over the last four years of raising money for macular disease we’ve discovered there are few families who are NOT affected by some form of sight loss.
