10K for 10K · 8 May 2020

Our aim is to help Rotherham people maintain their independence and quality of life as they get older. We also aim to give older people the opportunity to take part in activities that will help them to stay healthy and active, maintain social contacts and mix with people from different generations.

Story

The Rotherham 10K, in support of Age UK Rotherham, has previously attracted hundreds of runners of all abilities and ages, but this year is a little different... people wanting to participate in the 2020 Rotherham 10K have asked to do so virtually.

Triple S have teamed up to do the 10K from their gardens and around their local area. Steve Dabell is a SHEQ Advisor for BOC, based in Brinsworth. Along with his colleagues, he is maintaining a vital supply of medical oxygen to local NHS hospitals, which is especially important in these challenging times. Steve's future Son-In-Law, Shreyas Srivatsa, who is a Business Development Executive, has also joined in. As they're in lockdown together, they will be completing the 10K side by side through laps in their garden. Shreyas' Dad, Dr Srivatsa Sambamurthy, is the final member of Team Triple S. Dr Srivatsa is currently working as a member of the frontline staff in the fight against Covid-19.

The team says, 'We have joined together to raise money for Age UK Rotherham, because through our family connections with the charity, and work in Rotherham, we know how vital the support offered to older people is. This help is needed more than ever now, because older people are so affected by Covid-19.'

Older people are even more isolated, lonely and in need of help. In the first few weeks of lockdown, Age UK Rotherham:

  • received 871 calls from older people or their carers
  • provided 829 support actions (such as shopping or collecting prescriptions) for older people
  • made 657 reassurance calls to vulnerable older people helping to reduce loneliness
  • made 128 deliveries of essential shopping to shielded or isolated older people

Please support Team Triple S by donating as much as you can, so we can achieve our goal to help Age UK Rotherham keep doing their important work!
