Story

Hi, I'm Ted, Tim's son. I'm doing my A levels this year.

My dad was rubbish at baking but otherwise he was an outstanding person. He was a great dad and brilliant teacher and he carried on working even when he got bowel cancer because he loved his job and wanted to look after us. Then on Christmas day last year his condition became critical and we knew he was reaching the end of his life.

Me and my mum and brother and little sister did what we could to take care of him at home but it was unimaginably hard. One night just after dad's birthday, we knew we couldn't carry on anymore and phoned St Peters Hospice. We were so relieved they could offer him a bed. We didn't know what to expect but it was an amazing state of the art place in beautiful grounds with fantastic doctors, nurses and counsellors.

My dad had lost nearly everything but they made him feel so safe and comfortable he was able to carry on for another few days being himself and exploring the meaning of his life. Dad was very creative and produced a series of tapes for us called Tim's Rules for Life. He saw lots of friends and gave them encouragement and inspiration. My dad always said he loved his life and had been really happy. The hospice bought him time so he could courageously prepare himself to give it all up having had just 54 years to enjoy it.

The whole of St Peters costs £22,000 a day to run and dad was there for 17 days. What keeps blowing us away is that to the incredible humans at the hospice, it was worth spending that much money on a strangers life to help make sure his death was dignified, pain free and meaningful without expecting anything in return.

But every year the hospice have to raise enough charitable donations to cover their costs and COVID has hit them drastically. I'm taking part in the Tour de Bristol to try to repay some of what they gave to us. Dad would have loved to have got on his bike to ride beside me. But instead I've got my COVID team of 6.

We think everyone hopes the end of their life will be something like dad's. Your donations to will go towards keeping that option open to as many people as possible.

Dan Brown is my friend and neighbour and taking my dads place. I walk his dog Ben who I love.

Luke Velarde-Banks has been my best friend since primary school

Nick Banks is Luke's dad.

Dom Grant is Tim's colleague from UWE

Antony Fairweather is my neighbour who's slimming cat Fenton I feed

The more you can donate, the more bed spaces we can help keep open

Thanks for supporting the hospice. Ted x
