Today I shaved another 20 seconds off a 9 mile run... That's 1minute faster than last month. Slow progress but at least it's some!!
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Please take the time to read why I care about this charity so much - I have just wrote and re-read this story and I'm finding it almost impossible not to well up due to the memories it is bringing back. I don't want to "sob story" you but I this will have been a mammoth challenge for me and the charity is an incredibly worthy one.
A year ago I couldn't run.... literally couldn't - the thought of having to run from Euston to catch the last train back up north after work drinks, or run to my friend's house if I was late (she lives next door!) terrified me... I was in awe of people running 10k s and I never thought I'd be able to run more than to the bar for last orders!! My how things change in a year....
One day in summer 2011 I started going to the gym and thought this running lark mustn't be too bad if so many people do it.... And so I began. Having run for 9 months off and on I realised I needed something to run for and to aim for to keep me motivated. Run to the Beat Half Marathon 2012 appeared on the horizon and it is on a date I hold incredibly close to my heart, a date a will never forget for the rest of my life...
When I was 11 my dad died of bowel cancer on 28th October so this year will be the 15th anniversary of his death. I couldn't think of a greater sign, better goal and more obvious cause for me to run for.
I always remember the couple of months before 28/10/97 when my dad was ill, the assistance that Macmillan provided to him and my family during this time was invaluable. We could not have asked for more and I know that every one of my family could not thank the nurses that were sent from macmillan and we will be eternally grateful to them.
I would like to think that every one in our immediate family has been truly touched by the efforts and support from Macmillan and I believe that I am running for a amazing cause. I have now also recently found out that both my grandad's are suffering from cancer. The prognosis was shakey for a short while for one but for now it is good news.
So many of us are touched by cancer several times through our lives - please join me in helping others and show your support through supporting my in my demanding challenge.
