Story
Like all ancient buildings, St James, my lovely local church, needs lots of Tender Loving Care. In 2018 alone its costs were over £6,668 . Who knows what maintenance bills lie ahead? We all need to keep buildings like this intact to welcome believers and non believers alike for a spot of much-needed serenity.
St James's is the only public building in the picturesque vEast Yorkshire village of Nunburnholme. A hub for bell-ringing, events, concerts, exhibitions, workshops and even the odd service or two. It's also an amazing building in its own right, containing an Anglo Saxon cross straight out of Beowulf, and some fine, if slightly indecent, Romanesque carving. Previous rectors include Revd Francis Orpen Morris (1854 to 1893) who wrote extensively on British birds, hated Charles Darwin's guts and, apparently, really did believe that dogs go to heaven. He also had the mother of all moustaches, as a picture of him in the church testifies.
I'll be climbing aboard Bikey on 14 September for an exhausting tour up and down the local Wolds taking in the churches of Pock, Burnby, Londesborough and a few other East Yorkshire hot spots in the company of church warden Andrew Henworth, his son Ewan and as many other unsuspecting cyclists as we can rope in.
St James will be open 10 - 4 on the day, so pop in, have a look around and a cuppa. Find Nunburnholme on Wikipedia for more info on how to get there.
But most importantly, sponsor me. It's a great cause. Your money will be divided 50:50 between St James and Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust who provide grants to maintain the fabric of Yorkshire's wonderful old churches.
