We are helping young people with SEND to help themselves

Story

Hello, we are Kate & Tess and we have decided to take on walking a 100km ultra-challenge across the Jurassic coast within 34 hours to raise money for a cause close to our hearts. The event will take place on the 14th of May 2022.

We love the outdoors and walking but even for us this is a HUGE challenge!!! We plan to document our training walks and the BIG EVENT.

We are fully expecting for there to be lots of ups, downs and tears however this will be a small price to pay compared to the challenges many children, families and young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities encounter every day.

Why are we doing the challenge?

Having seen first-hand the incredible work Uplands Enterprise Trust (UET) do throughout our local community we have decided to raise funds for this incredible organisation. Uplands Enterprise Trust’s vision is ‘Helping young people with SEND to help themselves through, Creating Skills for life, Enabling Skills for Work and Supporting Skills for Ever’.

Tess’s brother has a diagnosis of Autism and ADHD. Throughout Primary School he was often labelled as naughty and misunderstood. He was out of education for two years and it was difficult to find a school which could meet his needs but eventually Churchward School (part of the Brunel SEN Multi Academy Trust) accepted Tess’s brother into their community, since then he has blossomed, and the transformation has been phenomenal. Uplands Enterprise Trust (UET) offer Brunel SEN Multi Academy Trust: After school, Weekend and School Holiday respite for parents and carers for children with Special Needs or Disabilities within the surrounding areas. They also support young adults post education to have a purpose within their local community to build on for work and skills for life.

UET are currently running two projects to raise
money for:

  1. A sensory room that will give children and young people a
quiet space away from the main area where they can learn to self- regulate their own emotions which will help with their mental health. The project is £24k in total and they currently have £8k.
  2. Laptops/Ipads for the ‘Skills for Work’ team to help with their online store. They sell donated items to raise a profit which they putback into UET! The young adults that attend the programme run the online store.

What is the Challenge?

We will be taking on an ultra-challenge of
100km’s continuous ultra-challenge across the Jurassic coast. We will start at Corfe Castle on a great route which loops down to Swanage, then across to Lulworth Cove and Durdle door, with ups and downs to Weymouth, we will then continue along the Chesil Beach to West Bay’s famous Cliffs finishing at Brideport.

A Good Comparison for our Local
Supporters- Putting the challenge into perspective…

Imagine walking from Swindon to Southampton with unpredictable weather, hilly terrain, through the night and with no sleep.

Finally…

We want to thank you for your kindness in
supporting us to support the Uplands Enterprise Trust (UET). All donations will
be gratefully received no matter how big or small.

Please keep your eyes peeled for regular
updates.

Lots of Love,

Tess and Kate
