As a family, we have been involved with the Douglas Bader Foundation and seen first hand the difference a day out can make to a family who face huge challenges every day.
Bader Braves offers a chance for children between 6-16 suffering a disability and their families an opportunity of an adventure in a light aircraft. In the four years since its introduction the charity has flown over 650 Bader Braves and their families throughout the UK and by the end of the 2014 season in September that number will have rises to over 800.
Having helped at these days, spoken to the parents and counted my blessings when asked to join a triathlon team the response was a forgone conclusion, even without a glass of wine in my hand ! So I'm swimming in the Docklands, passing the baton to my husband to cycle and finally onto my brother to run !
The foundation has provided funding for four residential adventure weekends at various venues that has introduced these children and their families to the excitement of outdoor living. Plans are in place to develop the programme to include ocean sailing and motorsport experiences and ensure that no qualifying child is denied the opportunity due to geographical location or financial inability.Braves is a programme introduced by the Douglas Bader Foundation in 2010 as part of the charity’s celebration of the centenary of the birth of its namesake Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader, the famous double amputee WW2 fighter ace and leader immortalised in the film Reach for the Sky.
We work with the maxim of Baders own words that “a disabled person who fights back is not disabled … they are inspired!!
