Story

This week is #ChildrensHospiceWeek and Summers-Inman is supporting celebrating their centenary year by supporting Together for Short Lives. They are amazing charity, who step up and take on one of the hardest experiences any human could face: Being there for a family as their child dies.

This week, in honour of #ChildrensHospiceWeek, Together for Short Lives offered a ‘Challenge Wheel’ – Spin to ‘win’ a challenge. In a fleeting moment of enthusiasm, I decided to spin the wheel of challenges, to see what fate had in store for me…

And apparently we are continuing with Summers-Inman's centenary theme, as I was tasked with completing 100k steps during Children’s Hospice Week. Not feeling overly enthralled with the task, I took the weekend to mull it over, and came up with a list of reasons to not complete the challenge.

  • It’s meant to be 30+ degrees this week in London (Not ideal weather for exceedingly long walks)
  • I’m not very fit, so would definitely struggle (Especially as I’m averaging at 126 steps per day since lockdown!)
  • I’m diabetic, which adds complications to any physical challenge
  • I work full time, leaving little time to complete 20k steps everyday
  • I could simply donate some money to the charity, which would still be a great, and easier, contribution

It seemed like a no-brainer… more time to relax/ sunbathe/enjoy my evenings and not worry about all of the above!

I then thought about the charity, and remembered that I don’t have a child who is terminally ill, and that if the worst happened, and I did - The above list would pale into insignificance.

So off I went..

I dragged along my partner, Seb (Convincing him that it was merely a leisurely sunset-walk with a picnic and a pint in the park) and nearly 4 hours later we had wearily completed 21,705  steps (With the help of a picnic and a pint as a pit-stop).

We plan to do the same again every weeknight this week, and hope that you will share the below links (I’m also sharing on my LinkedIn and Facebook etc.) to encourage donations towards this amazing charity. They deal with the big stuff (Literally: Life, death, love, loss, hope, grief, trauma and family), leaving us to be fortunate enough to only have to worry about the
small stuff. And for that, I can sacrifice a tan and an early night for a week.

Any support would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks, Hannah x
