Story

We are three generations – grandmother, daughter and granddaughter
– aging from nearly 90 (!!) to early 30’s – doing the daring 100 metres abseil down the side of the iconic Spinnaker
Tower in Portsmouth to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice, who provide amazing care for cancer patients and their families.

We are Tam Thompson, turning 90 in May and recently widowed in January, from Michael who she had known since she was just 13 years of age. Tam lives in Tunbridge Wells where she brought up her family which now consists of three children, seven grandchildren and, so far, six great grandchildren! Tam is the oldest person to do the Spinnaker Tower Abseil!!

Maxine Pickup nee Thompson, widowed from Mark Pickup nearly
5 years ago. Mark had bowel cancer that spread to his liver, he fought hard for over four years and left behind three children, Jack, Harry and Olivia.  The Pickup family were, and continue to be, supported by the Princess Alice Hospice. Maxine will never forget how quickly the hospice team put her at ease at their first meeting, reassuring her and helping her to cope with Mark’s condition knowing that the hospice were there to support her whole family.  Maxine lives in Shepperton and has never done abseiling but is reassured by her 89 year old mother that she will be fine!!

Megan Stapely, recently married and now living in London where she is a paediatric physiotherapist and has seen first-hand the amazing role that hospices play in the care of patients of all ages. Megan is well travelled and has done bungee jumps in the past but has never abseiled…

We are excited and nervous to do this abseil challenge but are keen to do something memorable to raise money for the hospice, to make a
difference and take home some incredible memories!

We really appreciate your sponsorship and ask that you declare if you are eligible for Gift Aid as this would allow the Hospice to reclaim the tax from your donation (25%) at no extra cost to you.

Money raised through events like our Abseil all contribute to the running of the Hospice and the outstanding free care that they provide to their patients and families.
