What is The Great Race for Alzheimers? The Great Race for Alzheimers is a seventeen hour event on Saturday 7th October 2017,  where pairs of people (family and friends) are frantically racing around Hull completing challenges that test their strength, skills and stamina.

The team members do not know anything about the challenges in the race until the day so challenges have to remain top secret - to give a flavour of the sort of things that could be expected,  8 years ago when we the pilot event, teams had to join the library, dress as fisherman, find landmarks, dance and much more. What we can say however, is a THANK YOU in advance to all of the individuals, local and national organisations that are supporting the event to make it a truly fantastic day.

Why now? Not only is the race a really fun event for everybody involved - it's main purpose is to race money for Alzheimers Research UK - a charity changing people's lives and their family and friends lives through their endless ground-breaking research.

Last year, some of the group did a sky dive for Alzheimers Research UK and at that point we had already sadly seen the effects on family and friends when somebody we loved no longer remembered our name, our holidays, our days out, our lives together.

This year for some of the group the last remaining grandparent or parent died at the hands of dementia- and as we started to talk about the sadness it had caused us for the last decade... it became apparent that everybody seemed to know somebody who is suffering, has suffered or will suffer - the statistics show that every three seconds someone develops dementia equating to 9.9 million new cases across the world every year and for all of those people with dementia there are a huge number of informal carers that spend every day and night trying to make their loved ones life more comfortable.

This Great Race for Alzheimers is to say we can make a difference - Let's support Alzheimer's Research UK to change these figures and to change lives.
