Hannah is fundraising for a community defibrillator at Railway Gardens

More than 40,000 people experience a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital in the UK every year. On Saturday July 25th I will be walking 40,000 steps, or a little over 17 miles, from Pontrypridd to Railway Gardens in Splott, Cardiff, to raise money for a publicly accessible defibrillator for the community.

The first 3-5 minutes in a cardiac arrest situation can be life changing. Fewer than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest; using a defibrillator within 3–5 minutes can increase survival rates to 50–70%

Railway Gardens welcomes over 7,500 people through its gates every year. In addition we want to make it as easy as possible for local people to access a defibrillator. While we are lucky to have several defibrillators around Splott, survival rates fall by 10% with every minute without CPR or defibrillation; I am therefore hoping to raise the £1,680 needed to install a publicly accessible defibrillator outside of our gates.

I also invite you to join me to walk the last stretch of the walk, either Cardiff Bay (at roughly 1pm), or the Magic Roundabout (at roughly 1:30pm), depending on how far you fancy walking!

How a Defibrillator Will Help the community

Once installed, the defibrillator will be registered with the local ambulance trust and available for the public to use 24/7.

This doesn’t replace emergency services. Instead, it provides immediate, potentially life-saving intervention while the ambulance is enroute. The quicker the shock is delivered, the greater the chance of survival.
