Story
Calling all Oxford Brookes University students and staff at Harcourt Hill Campus! On Thursday 14th April we want you to get involved and dress up for the day with me Mike Dennis and the School of Education to raise money for Sobell House and The Sobellevision Project.
The theme is children’s television characters and all we are asking for is a minimum £2 donation to join in!
As dressing up is not everyone’s cup of tea, on the day it will be possible to buy an immunity sticker which acknowledges that you have donated but do not want to dress up.
The aim of The Sobellevision Project is to replace the current wall mounted televisions at Sobell House with easy to use high quality TVs.
Mike Dennis, Senior Lecturer in Primary Science has initiated this project after his experiences as Sobell House recently. He says:
"As you may know, in August 2014 my lovely wife Rachel died in Sobell House after having lived with cancer for 11 years. She spent the last two weeks of her life there and although she was very frightened at the prospect of being admitted it quickly proved to be just right for her. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff and the love and care they provided for Rachel, me and my family. It is a truly special place, not a phrase I would use lightly.
Each room on the hospice ward has a wall mounted television for which you have to pay £10 a day to use. It is a complicated system and there is a difficult login procedure and when you finally get there the picture and sound quality is poor.
All my wife wanted to do was keep up with The Great British Bake Off.
I promised myself that after Rachel had died I would do my best to influence a change. With the help of our local MP Andrew Smith, it has been agreed that the franchise agreement can be put aside and the current system replaced by easy to use, high quality televisions."
