Story

On the 11th of June 2017, Tom's daughter, Keira was involved in a head on traffic collision with another car near Spean Bridge, Fort William. The scene was attended by both the Scottish Air Ambulance and Scottish Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA) which resulted in Keira being extricated from the car and airlifted to Raigmore hospital in Inverness. She had multiple injuries including breaks in both her arms, multiple lacerations, including a serious cut to her face and head, a compression fracture in her spine, a bruised heart, and internal injuries resulting in the loss of around 20cm of her bowels. The other passengers of the vehicle also suffered serious injuries; however, Keira’s required the most immediate attention. When arriving at Raigmore hospital she was met by Mike (Keira's uncle who lives and works in Dornoch) and underwent over 6 hours of emergency surgery. Tom and his wife Leigh arrived at the hospital and were able to briefly see her before she was airlifted to the Sick Kids hospital in Edinburgh where she spent over 2 weeks being treated. Keira was discharged from Sick Kids hospital on the 28th of June 2017, after 17 days, which seemed nothing short of a miracle.

This was a horrendous event for all involved, but the fast response of the emergency services and the time saved by the air ambulances leaves no uncertainty that Keira was able to receive treatment needed, extremely quickly which ultimately saved her life.

It costs SCAA £2,500 to attend each lifesaving call out and due to our family's extreme passion for what they did saving Keira and do for others enjoying the Scottish Highlands, we aim to raise a minimum £35,000 or 14 potential call outs (1 for each day of our challenge). These people save lives without any government funding and require the help of individuals and companies alike to help them do it. Can you help us help them?
