Story
The 26 March is Purple day, a day to raise funds, awareness and get people talking about epilepsy. The Gilbert Bros are raising funds for Epilepsy Society this Purple Day to help transform the lives of people (including two year old Tommy) living with epilepsy through awareness, research and care.
Back in July 2021, Tommy was only 22 months when he suffered a terrifying tonic clonic seizure, he was rushed to JPUH where after tests, an MRI scan & an EEG he was diagnosed with Epilepsy.
Sadly since then he has continued to be affected by a plethora of seizure types, including clonic, tonic clonic, absence seizures and more recently drop seizures.
As a family, led by three year old Teddy, we are raising money for Epilepsy research, not only because this illness has fully engulfed every element of all our lives, but also to raise awareness of the condition and how imperative genetic testing is to help identify the cause and in turn then control the seizures, through a cocktail of medication/procedures.
Our wish is for our little man to have this horrendous, unpredictable neurological condition under control and therefore have little impact on his life. In turn his global development delay gap could be closed, he will be able to walk with confidence and we will finally hear him say his first words!
Some facts you may not know about epilepsy:
• Up to 3% of people with epilepsy also have photosensitive epilepsy
• 1 in 3 people with epilepsy can not gain seizure control through available treatments
• Everyday 87 people are diagnosed with epilepsy
• Over 600,000 people in the UK live with epilepsy
• There are over 400 types of seizures
• There are 1000 epilepsy related deaths each year
This fundraiser is not just about raising money for a very worthy cause, but to raise awareness of this condition. Tommy may only be two and a half years of age, but he really is one courageous, strong and determined little guy - our very own Epilepsy Warrior 💜
