Story

What’s better than going on a big ol’ bike ride through beautiful scenery? Doing it every day for two weeks straight, with one change of clothes and sleeping under the stars … or more likely in the pouring rain. We’ll find out later this month when we - Will Weston, Will Hodgetts and Ben Medlam (me 😊) - cycle 1000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats!

With only the bags on our bikes and the energy of our youthful naivety, we’ll be cycling 80 miles a day through the treacherous wilds of Britain. The highs and lows will be as extreme as the hills we climb, but the cause we’re cycling for will keep our motivation tip-top.

Cancer is a brutally unforgiving disease; its appearance is just as sudden and unpredictable as the way it develops. However, it’s likely that everyone reading this has been affected in some way by cancer’s all-encompassing reach.

My father Jon had always been fit and healthy. However, last October what seemed like a minor cold quickly turned into respiratory failure which put him in Charing Cross ICU for over two weeks. After an array of tests and a lot of unknowns, we were shocked to discover that not only did he have cancer, but it was incurable stage 4 lung cancer. I’ve since witnessed the alarmingly rapid decline of his health, in particular over the past few months, and the resultant constantly changing situations and difficulties that he and my family have had to adapt to and cope with. Very sadly my father died on 13th August but I'm sure he will be with me every one of those 1000 miles.

Lung cancer has the highest mortality of cancers in the UK. This is partly because of a lack of screening and it being a particularly virulent disease that is usually caught late, once it has already metastasised.

That’s why we’re raising money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, the only lung cancer specific charity in the UK. They focus on research, support and alleviating the stigma attached to this particular cancer which, despite being one of the most common and deadliest, is also generally regarded as self-inflicted and unsavoury. As such, the Roy Castle Foundation really stands out, as they are totally dedicated to helping people with lung cancer live as well as possible for as long as possible.

So, having graduated into this barren, Covid-jobs desert, we’re taking Norman Tebbit’s infamous advice to get ‘on yer bike’ to heart. But perhaps in a more literal sense than he meant - and for a good cause! Please follow us for some top-quality updates, both our highlights along with some inevitable mishaps.
