The Guardians of Martock Church Bells Appeal

The four members who are all retired (retired vicar, retired care worker, retired business man, retired vet) are taking up the challenge of riding the length of the country in July 2008 - for as long as it takes (hopefully 15 days) in aid of two local charities which have great meaning for the participants.

St Margaret's Somerset Hospice is your local charity and exists to enhance the quality of life for those with a life-limiting illness, for example cancer, motor neurone disease and chronic lung disease, providing specialist palliative care, advice, support and respite to patients and their families living in Somerset and parts of neighbouring counties. There is no charge for our care.

Martock church’s eight bells, which are between 500 and 100 years old are silent because they have become unsafe to ring – and a familiar part of the village is missing. Throughout their long history the only previous silencing of the bells was brought about by the Second World War. Major building work is needed to be carried out before the bells can be removed and sent for the fitting of new headstocks and subsequent tuning. The Guardians Bells Appeal enables the project that will get them ringing again.
