Acorns Children's Hospice Trust - Walk for Worcestershire · 1 July 2012 ·
Bethan and Adam are very keen to raise as much money as they can for the Acorn Children's Hospice. Bethan started walking and running the Race for Life 5k to raise money for charity at the age of just three years - although at that point, Gran and Mummy did a lot of the work! We needed something different this time as Adam isn't allowed to do the Race for Life!
Bethan and Adam are both very concerned about children less well off than themselves. They spent a lot of time researching what hospices did and looking at some of the children and their families who use them. They felt it was the cause that they wanted to raise money for this year. It's especially important as it's a local charity - all the money raised goes to the Worcester hospice. Adam has joined us this time for his first family fundraising challenge.
We felt ready for a different challenge this year - 10.5 miles is a lot further but we are already in training and it's going well.. The Walk for Worcestershire organised by Free Radio on behalf of the Acorn Children's Hospice is on Sunday 1st July starting at 10am from the Three Counties Show Ground Malvern to Worcester. Adam may do an adapted 5 mile version - we'll see how it goes. More information on the Acorns Hospice below.
Acorns Children’s Hospice and all funds raised will be restricted to the Worcester Hospice.
Acorns provide care and support for children and young people with a life limiting or life threatening condition or illness (this means that they are unlikely to reach adulthood), as well as providing support for their families at every stage of their child’s life and beyond into bereavement.
The hospices offer short breaks, emergency and end of life care, alongside a dedicated team of community workers who are there to support a family 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Acorns for the Three Counties in Worcester opened in 2005. It has 10 bedrooms for the children, accommodation for parents and 2 special bedrooms where children can stay after their death and before their funeral. It also has facilities including holistic therapies, an extensive garden, a hydrotherapy pool, large multi-sensory room and play and activity areas with up to date IT equipment.
More than 225 families across Worcestershire and Herefordshire are currently receiving support from Acorns.
The majority of the £8m plus required to run Acorns’ services each year is generated through voluntary sources so the charity relies heavily on community support and fundraising events to continue to operate.
