Story

A ‘Maramonth’ for Cruse Bereavement Care

Hi there, we’re Charlotte and Tara and we’re raising money for Cruse Bereavement Care, to support people affected by the tragic death of a loved one due to Covid-19.

We’re running and rowing our way through the month of May to honour the thousands of people who have lost their life as a result of this horrible virus.

According to the World Health Organisation, as of April 30, 2020, over 230,000 people have sadly passed away due to coronavirus and the news of such 'numbers' has dominated our headlines, day after day.

We want to recognise that behind every one of these numbers is a real person. A grandparent, a mother, a father, brother, sister, friend and loved one. Every statistic is a family devastated, left behind, having to cope with a tragic, unexpected and sudden loss of someone they care about. Someone they are not even getting the chance to have their proper goodbye with. Even hug.

Bereavement support is so incredibly important, it affects our mental health in so many ways, and in these unprecedented times, charities like Cruse are so vital to help people who have been affected by the loss of a loved one. Even more so for those in isolation. To know that they are not alone and that what they are feeling is normal and valid.

We want to raise money by remembering every single person across the world who has sadly passed away.

Charlotte will be running 230,000 metres in the month of May, to recognise every person lost, the equivalent of 142 miles, over 5 Marathons.

“As a (very) amateur runner out of practice, this will be a huge challenge for me, and I plan to essentially do a 10KM run every day in May with the odd rest day thrown in. Every metre I run, and every step I take, will be for someone’s loved one.”

Tara will be rowing her way through May, on her home rowing machine, rowing 1000KM, the equivalent of 2 miles for every family grieving.

"I am NOT a runner! But I can row (not on water - geez!). And I have done for 25 years, for both my physical and mental health. When the gym lockdown came, I knew I'd struggle the most with not having my rowing time to switch off from the world for a while. So, I finally found a 2nd hand Concept2 from an NHS worker, as it happens, whose partner had bought it for her just before the pandemic hit. Needless to say, she wasn't home since to use it. This very much brought home my 'first world problems' and inspired me to focus my mind, and miles, on those effected the most by COVID-19. All 230,000 of them, and those left behind to grieve. Which could so easily be me."

We’ll be running and rowing our way through May, in order to remember every single person, and we hope you can support us to raise money for Cruse Bereavement Care.
