People affected by prostate cancer need breakthrough treatments. Research is the only way to turn this hope into reality. Combining patient stories and scientific expertise, we fund projects that have a real impact, reducing side-effects, cutting treatment costs and ultimately improving outcomes.

JUMP COMPLETE!!!

On the 14th June Chris Brooks & Satpal Chodha plummeted 10000 feet in aid of the Prostate Cancer Research Centre. Read the full story below...

Thanks to you we have successfully hit our fundraising target of £500. We have decided to leave the site active to collect donations for a bit longer in case some people still wish to donate.

Satpal's Grandfather, Kesra Singh Chodha (DCI) passed away in 2004 as a long term sufferer from prostate cancer. He led an active life and worked as an Immigration Officer and DCI Metropolitan Police before retiring. Christopher's grandfather Samuel Mornin died from prostate cancer on new years day 2001.

This event is in part memory of Kesra, Sam and other sufferers and we hope this event is a token contribution to the continued valuable research that goes towards finding a cure in the future.

It was an early 3:45am wakeup, and with a few final checks (spare underwear a necessity) we were ready to depart for Cambridge. Leaving the house I had time to pick up the newly delivered New Scientist magazine, and had time to catch the title of the lead article "Seven reasons why gravity doesn't make sense". Not quite sure what this seemingly fateful coincidence meant, I looked up at the sky, not a cloud in sight, at least none big enough to give any hope that weather would cancel the event...

Meeting Satpal at the Chatteris airfield I secretly hoped for more outward signs of stress and was a little disappointed. Satpal was a late and appropriate stand-in for Manjit who unfortunately was unable to jump for medical reasons (legitimate ones). It was quite a wait and by mid-day Satpal's name was called out and it was time to suit up and head to the plane. The plane climbed for 15 minutes and from the ground I had enough time to watch the speck descending from the plane for over 30 seconds before the chute opened. Soon it was time for me to suit up and do the same.

Nothing can describe the feeling as you fall forwards out of the plane, and your body weirdly finds a comfortable face-first balance. I think your body gets surprised by the non-impact when you first fall forward which is quickly overshadowed by the brains shock realisation that it is heading South fast (120 mph to be exact) .

When the chute opened we had 5 minute descent to earth through some thin cloud, with some fun g-force turns. A soft landing and it was job done

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Prostate Cancer Research Centre gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

In addition Camelot will match fund the amount we raise up to £1500, so it would be great if we could take full advantage of their generosity.

The Prostate Cancer Research Centre (
http://www.prostate-cancer-research.org.uk) is a registered charity whos mission is to raise funds to undertake research that will improve the survival and quality of life of men with prostate cancer.

Their current research programmes focus on three key areas:

  • Understanding prostate cancer development and progression
  • Managing prostate cancer – identifying the men who will benefit from treatment
  • Treating prostate cancer – to bring results from the laboratory bench to the bedside
