Story

It’s been nearly 8 years since I lost my brave, kind, funny, loyal, wonderful sister to bowel cancer. She wasn’t just a sister to me but a best friend and mother figure who was there whenever I needed her.

She was in the prime of her life when the disease was discovered, happily married for many years with 2 gorgeous children.

I remember the day she told me the news. It was snowing and I was home with baby William. She’d gone for a scan as she’d been getting a bit of back ache; no big deal. Yet that day changed our lives forever.

‘There’s a tumour’ she said calmly ‘it’s pretty big and it’s spread to the liver already, Its not good news , they can’t cure it’.

Even now typing the words I still get the cold feeling that ran through my body with that sentence.

After days on end of aggressive treatment and operations to prolong her time, Clare eventually passed away some 18 months later. She remained dignified and courageous to the end.

I know the circle of life means that death comes to us all at some stage but cancer takes no prisoners, especially in those so young. The pain and the suffering is something that cannot be described unless you’ve experienced it. By supporting me in this race you will give well needed cash to fund Bowel Cancer UK, a charity set up to aid families going through this time and commission further research into the disease to help with both prevention and cure.

I tried to make sense of Clare’s death by doing something positive with my own life. Bye bye glamorous media career, hello Bowel Cancer Screening job. To me that’s just another way of keeping her memory alive and if I can do my little bit to help others in similar situations, I’ll take that.

Clare was 43 when she died, the same age I’ll be this year. It’s only now that I feel ready to do something in her honour so please give generously and support a charity that hopefully you and your family will never need.

Thanks
