"But I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more....." Well, it's actually more like 95miles,152.888km to be precise! A route that spans from the outskirts of Scotlands largest city to the foot of her highest mountain! Through a region known as the west highlands, where it's estimated that 3 metres of rain falls on the land every year! Through terrain that is home to the most ferocious sub species of "Culicoides Impunctatus" known to man.....The Highland Midge! What should be an enjoyable but gruelling campaign, spread over a five day period, marching along the shores of Scotlands largest loch and across her grandest moors. They call it.....The West Highland Way!
After spending most of December sitting in the Forth Valley Royal Hospital, firstly at my wife's bedside in ward 7 in the women and childrens department, then 3 days later at my daughter's bedside in the childrens ward, it gave me loads of time to dwell on the fact that up until now, I have always taken the NHS for granted! How much more difficult would the whole ordeal have been without the outstanding quality of service we received! When we arrived in A+E with our daughter we were seen within an hour, 2 hours had passed and we had spoken to 7 doctors from different departments with different skills and opinions. 4 hours after our arrival we were in the children's ward waiting to go into surgery and 7 hours in my daughter had received successful, potentially life saving surgery! The worries of how we were going to pay for the treatment never crossed our minds and we received no interrogation from the staff about insurance policies or what our financial situation was. I have been lucky enough never to require medical treatment abroad but after being used to our own NHS I would imagine it would be a pretty horrific experience! The Denzel Washington film "John Q" sticks in my head, which is about a father who ends up having to take extreme measures to get his seriously ill son medical treatment in the U.S after his insurance policy refuses to cover the costs of the treatment. Worth a fiver for the dvd any day of the week!
So...... after having loads of time to think about all that, I decided I was going to try and give something back! Walking the West Highland Way this summer will hopefully be the first of many fundraising exercises I will be taking part in in the years to come. Our expedition will start on the 12 of June 2017 and I will be accompanied by two of my closest allies, Jack Lane and Rhys Maley. We will be raising money for the NHS Forth Valley Endowments Funds (Forth Valley Giving), Your help and support would be much appreciated!
Kind Regards
Ross Kane
