Campaign by University of Sheffield (RCN HMRC Registered)
The University of Sheffield is taking science out of the labs and into the real world by using waste mattress foam to grow fresh food in the desert for people displaced by war. With your help we can improve the quality of life for these refugees.

Story

The Desert Garden project is providing refugees in camps with a unique way to access fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables. By growing their own fresh produce, refugees will gain vital skills and a sense of purpose, improving their mental health. The produce they grow also holds cultural significance, which means that they will be able to enjoy tastes of home, such as traditional salads and fresh mint tea at large gatherings. Growing fresh produce from the ground is not permitted in refugee camps. So, by using 'hydroponics' to grow produce from used foam mattresses, a new way of growing plants in an arid climate is being developed, and materials destined for landfill are being re-purposed. With your help we can raise £50,000 by the end of December 2019 to keep this project going and allow it to become self-sustaining. Our vision is for Desert Gardens to flourish in refugee camps and developing countries worldwide.
