Story
On 14th May, I’m taking on the Miles for Mermaids challenge by walking 25 miles along the coastline from Edinburgh to East Lothian.
At 50, this is going to be a physical and mental challenge for me. I’m getting active for one very important reason: to help raise funds for Mermaids UK, so that trans young people and their families can continue to access the wonderful support Mermaids offer. As a parent, I’ve personally found their support, resources, and community incredibly valuable over the past few years.
Just £10 could pay for an introductory session for volunteers at Mermaids UK, helping them start their journey to support trans youth.
With just £20, you can fund an hour of vital support from one of our dedicated Helpline Officers, ensuring trans youth have access to compassionate and knowledgeable assistance when they need it most.
£50 could secure a venue for a local group session. This contribution provides a safe and welcoming space for trans youth to connect, share, and support each other. Your generosity helps create a nurturing environment where they can thrive and build a sense of community.
£100 could fund a month’s hosting for our online forum at Mermaids UK. This vital platform offers trans youth a safe space to connect, share experiences, and find support.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I want to use this challenge to highlight the importance of wellbeing, community, connection, and inclusive spaces.
I’ll be walking from Soul Water Sauna in Granton to Hot and Bothy Community Sauna near Dirleton - inclusive places that represent wellness, connection, and community. In true sauna geek fashion, I’ll start the day with a sauna and finish with a sauna at the other end!
The direct route is around 23 miles, so I’ll be taking coastal paths and beaches to bring the distance up to 25 miles.
This journey brings a few important things together:
- Raising awareness and funds for trans young people
- Highlighting the importance of trans-inclusive spaces and the wider impact that safe, welcoming environments can have on everyone’s wellbeing
- Promoting mental wellbeing through movement, community, nature, and sauna
For me, this isn’t just a walk. It’s a way of showing support, starting conversations, and encouraging others to think about how we create safer, more supportive environments for everyone.
Thank you so much for your support.
