We save land to save species.

Story

World Land Trust (WLT) is an international conservation charity which protects the world’s most biologically important and threatened habitats.

WLT does this through empowering local partner organisations by providing finance and technical support to create and protect reserves, restore degraded habitats and ensure their permanent protection.

The great impact of WLT is summarised by Sir David Attenborough: “The money that is given to the World Land Trust, in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of” (speaking at: ‘Biodiversity and Business: The Cost of Life on Earth’,2012)

Watch his speech here (any excuse for some David Attenborough!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebfS929i7TY

WLT’s approach:

  • Land acquisition: conservation of threatened habitats through land purchase. WLT funds the purchase or lease of threatened habitats to create nature reserves, protecting both habitats and their wildlife. WLT does not own or manage this land: this is done by local partner organisations or communities.
  •  Tree planting & assisted natural regeneration: restoration of deforested and degraded land, once it is under management by WLT partners, through tree planting and/or removing a threat to allow a forest to regenerate naturally.
  • Reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation: WLT implements a number of REDD+ projects. REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) is utilised by the Carbon Balance Programme to fund the protection and restoration of areas of threatened forest and reduce emissions that contribute to climate change
  • Reserve management: WLT funds partner NGOs to employ members of local communities as reserve rangers. This ongoing management ensures the land remains protected and allows action to be taken on the ground.

All money raised through this page will go directly into WLT’s “Action Fund” which is directed to the most urgent project needs. Currently, these are ‘Buy an Acre’ projects in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Mexico. The Action Fund also supports: the ‘Special Appeal’ to save habitats for big cats, threatened orang-utan habitat in Borneo and wildlife corridors for elephants in India; the ranger programme (‘Keepers of the Wild’); and, restoration of deforested land (‘Plant a Tree’).

PLEDGE: I will match the amount raised with my own money, doubling the total donation (physical pain of running + financial drain = evidence I really do believe this is very important!)
(NB: I'll match up to the first £500 - I have just graduated from university and so have student debt and currently no future job)

Please give as much as you feel able - WLT and everything you are helping protect (the species, land, local communities and future of our planet) will benefit so much from your generosity, and I too will be so grateful for your support.

Lots of love, Tilia xx
