Kivuli Trust (‘kivuli’ meaning shelter in Kiswahili) builds hostels and classrooms on the premises of existing schools in East Africa specifically for children with physical and mental disabilities. Our projects allow for small class sizes where these children will be given the attention that they deserve. The hostels negate the need for long daily journeys to and from the schools and provides the children with a more stable learning environment. Most importantly our projects allow for integration with other school children which provides invaluable disability awareness and understanding at a young age that can then filter back into the wider community. Jake, Malachi, Hugh and I have decided to raise money for The Kivuli Trust as a result of our volunteering here in Gilgil. The Kivuli Special School was set up as a separate entity from Kivuli School as a result of the things experienced by the handicapped children from the original school. Disabled girls experienced violation from men in the area, however when cases were taken to court, they were dismissed as a direct result of the girls’ disabilities. The Kivuli Special School now accounts for 68 students and does an amazing job educating them in different classes based on the students’ respective abilities. The whole setup is amazing and is in need of funding, especially due to the lack of volunteers because of coronavirus.

We would really appreciate any funding, no matter the amount, in order to directly help this pioneering foundation.
