Story

Corona to Kona’

Thank you for taking the time to read about Nottingham TFN Triathlon Club team fund raising event to help buy an outdoor cross trainer gym for the Cancer Patient Ward at Nottingham City Hospital.

TFN Tri Club is participating in a ‘virtual long distance event’ racing against 18 other triathlon clubs from around the country and as far away as the Shetland Islands - to complete a combined 2,311km of running AND 13,000km of cycling to simulate the distance from UK to Kona, Hawaii (the home place of Ironman Triathlon World Championships).

The ‘running’ is outside or on a treadmill and the ‘cycle’ on an indoor cycle trainer or a bike ride outside (sticking to Government guidelines). The first team to complete the total running AND cycling distances will be crowned the WINNERS. The event starts
8am Monday 20th April 2020 and we envisage will take 3-4 weeks to complete.

A former TFN Tri Club  member, Lucy Gossage, ex-UK professional triathlete and a consultant oncologist at Nottingham City Hospital strongly promotes exercise during/after cancer treatment and quotes ‘there is now good evidence that being active during cancer treatment is safer than being inactive. However, opportunities to stay active in hospital are limited! Nottingham City Hospital oncology has a fabulous roof terrace and we are very grateful to have been donated a spinning bike for use by patients from one of Team TFN. We are now hoping to buy an outdoor cross trainer and some waterproof covers so that patients can stay active together while staying in hospital for treatment.’

Helping cancer patients keep active throughout treatment and recovery is particularly close to the heart of TFN members as Lucy and the oncologist team at Nottingham City Hospital have helped several members of the club and their families.

Any donations would be greatly appreciated to this fantastic cause...thank you (if possible please put TFN on your donation post somewhere)

Thank you. TFN Tri Club
