Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My name is Tim, I'm 56 and have been living with Motor Neurone Disease for almost six years.

Motor Neurone Disease is a nasty, pernicious illness that is currently both untreatable and incurable. Motor Neurone Disease (MND) attacks the body's nerve cells (neurones) that control muscles causing the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste away. People with MND lose variously the ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe. In the UK around 5,000 people are living with MND at any one time. Every day in the UK six people will be diagnosed with MND and unfortunately another six people will die from Motor Neurone Disease. There is no cure.

Most people will know of MND because of Prof. Stephen Hawking. Stephen lived with MND for 55 years. This is most definitely not the norm, around half the people diagnosed with MND will only live for two years at most.

Thankfully, I find myself in the other half of MND sufferers. I have been living with MND for almost six years and although most people would be unaware that anything is wrong with me I live with fatigue ,weakness in my left arm, leg and side, muscle spasms and muscle cramps. Since my diagnosis three years ago I have been involved in a number of research projects at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital here in Sheffield; donating blood, tissue and even spinal fluid samples as well as taking part in investigations into the role of mitochondria in MND and other investigations monitoring lung capacity and breathing in MND sufferers.

I have been wanting to undertake a challenge to raise funds for Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), the largest MND charity in the UK for some time but been frustated by Covid restrictions.

I have just finished walking the 96miles/154km of the West Highland Way, along with my wife, Nicola to help raise money so that MNDA can continue with their work supporting those families affected by MND, providing essential equipment and grants for with things such as home modifications, as well as funding essential  research into MND and campaigning to promote greater awareness of MND.

We enjoyed 10 days of walking through truly beautiful Scottish countryside, walking from Milngavie, on the outskirts of Glasgow, along Loch Lomond, over Rannoch Moor and through Glen Nevis into Fort William in the Highlands.

The scenery was amazing and so, surprisingly was the weather, with only one day of non-stop rain, the rest of the walk was hot, hot, hot.

An amazing experience.

I'd like to thank any one who donated. Your money will be well used to fund essential research in to MND and also support those people whose lives are thrown into chaos by this disease.

I'd also like to thank my wife, Nicola for all her support, and also my walking poles, Lefty and Righty without whom I would not have been able to complete this challenge.

!!THANK YOU !!
