This time Club Triumph has chosen to support Epilepsy Research UK in memory of much missed Club stalwart Martin Randle, who passed away in June 2017 at the tragically young age of 56 from issues associated with epilepsy.
Mike Hockaday and I will be taking part in our 15th Club Triumph RBRR together in my 1966 Triumph TR4A. To date we have only failed to finish this iconic event on one occasion, in 1982 when, following careless work by a British Leyland main dealer, an oil cooler hose chafed through on Bodmin Moor putting us out. I have entered seven other RBRRs with different co-drivers and failed to finish once, in 1978, when a newly fitted water pump failed in the Highlands. Since then I have always carried a spare pump in the boot. So far my RBRR record is 19 finishes from 21 starts in the same car, substantially more than any other.
The TR was bought by my father in 1970 as a retirement present to himself and inherited by me as a family heirloom. It is in year round use with an annual mileage of at least 6,000, much of it on Club events. The car has been extensively upgraded to improve safety and usability in today’s traffic conditions.
Crews are of course responsible for all their fuel costs on the event. It is therefore fortunate that the TR returns 35mpg+ on a long run – not bad for an engine the basic design of which dates back over 70 years! Overdrive is fitted, operating on 2nd, 3rd and top giving seven forward ratios, a gear for every situation.
