For 6 years, my best friend of 14 years (and now fiancé) Sarah, was held in an abusive relationship by her ex-husband. 6 years of coercion, manipulation, gaslighting, intimidation, threats and fear instigated by the very one who should have protected her. 6 years of physical violence, psychological and emotional destruction, and financial abuse. This wasn’t exclusive - his treatment extended to their young daughter. When she finally said no to him and ended the relationship, he escalated his behaviour to a flashpoint where he was arrested by the police. This didn’t stop him - years of blackmail attempts, slander and attempts at financial ruination followed and, even though he has since remarried, the abuse still continues to this day, their daughter bearing the brunt of it.

I have witnessed it all. I have seen the shocking and heartbreaking damage that domestic abuse and violence can cause, and the deep scars it leaves behind.

Violence and abuse should never be tolerated. That the most insidious and despicable behaviour can be calculated and instigated by the one who is supposed to unquestionably protect and care for someone on the deepest, most profound level, is the ultimate, unforgivable betrayal. We are coming back to life and we will repair ourselves and rebuild, but the shadow cast is long and looming.

October is National Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, and I will be walking 62 Miles in October for Refuge. They provided Sarah with support and guidance in the aftermath of her ex when she felt alone and isolated by his constant attacks. The goal is to raise £250, which can pay for a child to receive 7 weeks of intensive support from a Child Support Worker from the moment they arrive in a refuge. Every child needs to feel safe so that they too can speak out against abuse inflicted upon them without fear of reprisals. No child, woman or partner should ever feel afraid of the person whom they are meant to trust, love and depend on the most.
