Toby's 4 Peaks Challenge

4 Peaks Challenge · 6 July 2020
FOUR PEAKS; FOR DOCTORS
4 mountains (combined height to climb: 4.26km)
5 countries (combined distance to bicycle: 868.73km)
1 strange man...
Hello to you and thanks for being here. I'll get straight to it.
While COVID -19 continues to prevent me from working as a touring
musician, I’ve decided to use the opportunity to do something to help a charity I’ve been following and supporting for a couple of years.
Médicins Sans Frontières (MSF) – also known as Doctors Without
Borders – is a global movement employing 30,000 staff and working across 65 countries to provide medical aid to those who need it most.
Because it retains political independence, neutrality and impartiality, it
relies on funding from individuals like me and you.
The idea of raising funds for this heart-warming cause was born
when I asked my Dad to think of a physical endurance challenge I could do for charity. He suggested climbing the highest four peaks in each of the home nations and travelling between them by push-bike. Perhaps foolishly, I agreed...
Choosing a donation target seemed an odd and difficult task so,
arbitrarily, I chose to multiply the miles I'm pedalling (539.8, to be
precise), by the number of mountains I'm climbing (4). The calculator-I-mean-my-inbuilt-maths-genius-brain duly showed the ambitious but not impossible figure of £2,159 to aim for. Now all I need is your help to reach it.
For the purposes of clarity, here’s a breakdown of my side of
the deal.
Total peaks = 4
Upward climb on foot = 4257 metres of elevation
Distance to cycle = 539.8 miles
- I'll start with the highest and possibly the hardest climb
up Ben Nevis (1344m), which is not only the highest mountain in Scotland but also the whole of the UK.
- I'll then cycle 193 miles from Ben Nevis to
the port of Cairnryan and take the ferry to Belfast.
- From Belfast, I'll cycle 35.2 miles to the
highest peak in Northern Ireland Slieve Donard (850m). From
Slieve Donard, I'll cycle 89.5 miles to Dublin and then hop on
another ferry to Holyhead.
- From Holyhead, I'll jump (or maybe by this point hobble) back
to the bike, hop on it and pedal 40.1m south-east to Snowdon (1085m); the highest mountain in Wales.
- After climbing Snowdon, I will don my cycling gear for the
last stretch of 182 miles (feeling sick now) to England’s
highest point; Scafell Pike (978m). Once I am back to my bike after climbing Scafell Pike, the challenge is complete!
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send you unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So basically, it's the most efficient way to donate - saving you time and cutting costs for the charity.
Big love and thanks in advance for your generous support.
Wish me luck!
