Story
Around the middle of last year I set myself the challenge of running a marathon before I turn 30, I think I must have been in a very good or optimistic mood that day as right now it seems like the most crazy idea ever. Running has completely changed my life, since picking up my first pair of bargain running shoes I have not looked back. It has made me a much healthier and fitter person on the outside. It has also made me this on the inside, giving me time to think about myself and dragging me through some low points in life. I would recommend it to anyone.
So now I have the love for running and want to do it continuously for a silly amount of hours, but where? Well, Brighton is one of my favourite places in England and holds many happy memories for me. I have enjoyed many a great day there with family, and touring with work. Most notably and recently it was the location of my older brothers, Oliy, stag do. (Im guessing there will be a lot less beer consumed for the Marathon Weekend). The course focus along the beach and growing up next to the sea has always left me with a connection to the sea side. So when the chance came to apply for a spot to run my challenge marathon there it seemed to fit and be the perfect event.
I have found the event and have managed to convince myself it is a good idea but why no make it a great idea and help raise (hopefully) a bucket load of money for an amazing charity? But why support Prostate Cancer Uk? Well without typing a massive sob story, my family recently has been really affected by cancer so I knew that I wanted to support a cancer charity. There are lots of them out there all doing absolutely fantastic work but after doing some research I couldn't believe how little I knew about prostate cancer. The fact that it is something that really focused on men really appealed. I know I for one am awful at making appointments with doctors and a limb will have to be hanging off before I do, so I think that it is really important to try and raise awareness and get men everywhere talking about health issues that affect them and break down the stigma of talking about the things that change our lives.
Some of the statistics are just incredible -
- Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men.
- Over 47,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year – that's 129 men every day.
- Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 11,000 men every year.
- 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime.
- Over 330,000 men are living with and after prostate cancer.
