Story
TOGS is managed by the Thika Diocese of the Anglican Church of Kenya to support poor grandparents who now care for their orphaned grandchildren. Hand in Hand has supported this scheme since the beginning of 2007.
The intention is to help grandparents become self sufficient, enabling them to provide for their orphaned grandchildren's education and welfare needs. After spending what little money they have on medicines for their children, these grandparents are left with no means to support their orphaned grandchildren, at a time in their lives when they are in need of support themselves. Currently support takes the form of ensuring that a water supply is available, providing rainwater harvesting tanks, drip irrigation set-up and provision of seeds which can be harvested for food consumption and sale, a dairy cow and shed as well as regular visits to monitor progress. The outcomes are to give the grandparents food security and the opportunity to provide their own income.
