London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·

Welcome to Team BDA for the 2023 April London Marathon - it's great to have you on board and thank you for joining the team.

Story

Please support me and the British Dyslexia Association as I aim for a sub 4-hour marathon in my first attempt! As a late call up due to a runner pulling out, can I do it starting my training 10 weeks out!?

I'd really appreciate a small donation or whatever you can spare!

5 points if you spot any spelling mistakes 😝

Why this charity?

One of my main struggles growing up with dyslexia was seeing others find tasks easy that I found very challenging. This then led me to be disengaged and often mess around in class, which obviously caused issues for others. It was a vicious cycle that held my development back. It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with dyslexia that I could help myself and understood why I found things harder. I was very fortunate that my family were able to help me with 1-1 tutors and extra curricula support from a young age - this then helped me get up to speed and maintain ‘more’ engagement in classes. I found my passion for sport and that kept me on the path I am now. I’d hate for young individuals to not have this support available now that was so crucial in my formative years, and that’s where the BDA lends a helping hand!

Who knows where I’d be now if I hadn’t received this necessary individual help…I probably wouldn’t have developed the foundational skills to go on and receive a BSc in Strength and Conditioning Science and now start my MSc this September in Applied Neuroscience at KCL! I want to show the next generation that being dyslexic doesn’t need to hold you back from achieving what you want, it might take extra work, or a slightly different path…but it will be worth it!

What do the BDA do?

BDA do brilliant work in providing early diagnosis for young individuals. The earlier the diagnosis the more help can be given to the child and the family to support their development, especially for families that might not be able to afford extra 1-1 support like I had.

They also offer the only national free helpline service for dyslexic people of all ages and those impacted by dyslexia. Run by volunteers with the support and guidance of our experts and specialists.

They continue to raise awareness of dyslexia which will make things easier for individuals currently struggling and the next generation. They work with a wide range of organisations to help cultivate and promote best practice for people with dyslexia, ultimately promoting neurodiversity.

Why should you support the BDA?

If you care about the next generation you should care about supporting the BDA! Who knows what remarkable individual is out there that could change the world, they might just need a little bit more support than others.

General information about dyslexia

1 in 10 people in Britain with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a learning difficulty which primarily affects reading and writing skills. However, it does not only affect these skills. Dyslexia is actually about information processing. Dyslexic people may have difficulty processing and remembering information they see and hear, which can affect learning and the acquisition of literacy skills. Dyslexia can also impact on other areas such as organisational skills.

It is important to remember that there are positives to thinking differently. Many dyslexic people show strengths in areas such as reasoning and in visual and creative fields.
