Land's End to John o'Groats · 12 August 2022

Third Hope works for the restoration of ex-child soldiers, offering them hope and a future through training in regenerative agriculture, vocational skills and trauma counselling. The project is based in Northern Uganda, which has suffered deeply from the tragic injustice of child soldiers.

Story

Right!!  Here we are again......Messrs Hardman & Teague are raising money for the school's charity: "Third Hope"

We're setting off on Friday 12 August 2022 to cycle 1000 miles from one end of the UK to the other - Land's End to John o'Groats. The route involves 47,000 feet of ascent (think Mt Everest followed by Mt Kilimanjaro!!!)

We want to raise £10,000

Why are we raising for Third Hope?

To celebrate Mrs Pollock's retirement.....and Mr Hardman's 30th year at Habs!

After 20 years' service, Mrs Pollock is retiring from Habs from her role as Director of Admissions. Prior to this role, she was our Head of 6th form. Back in 2012 and 2013, Mrs Pollock spent a month of her summer holiday out in Uganda working for Third Hope. Midway through the summer term, Mrs Pollock gave a vivid account of the work that Third Hope are engaged in to all the Lower School students.

Third Hope rehabilitates ex-Child Soldiers. 30,000 children were violently abducted from their village homes by the Lord’s Resistance Army, led by Joseph Kony. The same children were forced to kill their parents and burn their homes so that they had nowhere to return to. They were marched off to bush camps, drugged and brutalised into training as child soldiers. 20 ex-soldiers are now being cared for by Rose-Mary McIntyre.

Rose-Mary used to teach English at Habs until her PhD work, using the creative arts in trauma therapy, took her to Uganda where she was confronted with the horror outlined above. She gave up her PhD and she and her husband have dedicated their lives to finding a solution.

Rose-Mary and her husband David, bought 35 acres of bush land in this war-torn area, built a village-style residential home and planted a self-sustaining farm so that those who managed to escape and return would have somewhere to live, to heal and to rebuild their lives. These are deeply traumatised young men and women who have experienced unimaginable pain and violence. The centre has recently opened and 20 young ex child soldiers are taking part in the programme.

It costs approximately £1000 per year to sponsor each person on the programme.

Rose-Mary's pioneering programme is attracting international attention from other countries dealing with the humanitarian disaster of using children in conflict.

Mrs Pollock has just returned from Uganda having seen with her very own eyes just how the money we raise is being spent.

The Lower School have raised over £19,000 so far this year through the £1 Challenge and Ironman Atlantic Challenge.

And now we're asking everyone to get behind us one more time......

Thank you!!!

Yours

Mr Hardman
