Story

My nephew Jesse was born premature at 31 weeks. He had a number of complications due to premature rupture of membranes at 19.5 weeks and his prematurity. After fighting for his life and getting ready to leave the neonatal unit, my sister and her family were told Jesse had severe bilateral brain damage - Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). They were told he would have a number of physical and leaning difficulties and may not be able to see, hear or eat. That, amongst other things, it was likely he would have Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy. Jesse was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Cerebral Visual impairment this summer, however, he has continued to defy the odds and has done better than anyone expected and that's down to Jesse's fighting spirit, the efforts and love of his family and the help of charities like Footprints.

Footprints is a charity my sister and Jesse, have been attending for over a year now.
Footprints is a Conductive Education Centre which helps disabled children to develop physical function (to learn skills and conduct activities of daily living, such as dressing, eating, playing and self-care) and to promote independence.

Prior to lockdown Jesse attended the centre once a week. The therapists would create themed sessions to educate and teach physical skills in a fun environment and would help my sister with exercises and activities she could work on with Jesse at home. The centre and staff have helped Jesse develop and given practical advice and emotional support to my sister. The centre has also enabled my sister and Jesse to meet and make friends with other families with similar circumstances, which has been invaluable.

During the first lockdown the centre had to close and lost a lot of financial support and donations. At one point it was thought the centre might need to close. There aren't many centres like this locally. It is really important that the centre continues to stay open and help families to give their children the best possible start in life.

Once I do this, that's it! There's no going (or growing) back. Footprints are a charity that have provided so much support for Jesse so any donation would be very much appreciated.
