Northern Sumatra’s rainforests are irreplaceable. They are some of the most important forests on the planet, home to rare Tapanuli & Sumatran orangutans and other precious species. Supporting thousands of forest-edge communities, these ecosystems are key in the global fight against climate change.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Like most of you I have a big passion for amazing challenges, animals and the environment so i've decided to incorporate all these in one by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. I am doing this to raise money for the Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS).

I plan to start this challenge on the 15th of September 2011, taking a full six days to scale this massive mountain. As you can imagine I would love to raise as much money as possible for SOS, with my target being £3,500.

If you are interested in SOS you can find out more about them at http://www.orangutans-sos.org/about/

Those of you that know me know that I am not one of these people who preach to donate to charity so if you want to donate some money the decision is yours.

My personal opinion is that the human race is responsible for destroying the Orangutans (and many other species) habitat so the least we could do is to donate a mimimum of £10 (2 beers in London!!) or more to help preserve its habitat.

My main reason for supporting this charity comes about after doing some research into Orangutans and what we are doing to their habitat and why. Their habitat is being lost through being cleared to grow Palm Oil which is used in thousands of everyday products from margarine to lipstick, this is consumed by over a billion people across the world but it only grows in certain climates. The alarming thing is that Palm Oil can be found in one in ten supermarket products.

I also have a big passion for these types of animals following my mountain Gorilla trek in the DR of Congo in 2005.

For those of you who are interested in the crisis the Orangutans faces you can visit http://www.orangutans-sos.org/orangutans/crisis/

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

All the best

Tom
