London Marathon 2021 · 3 October 2021 ·

1:6000 children are born with microtia. Microtia results in underdeveloped ear(s) and impacts hearing. It can impact the heart, kidneys, different parts of the face and spine. There is an ongoing question whether microtia is environmental or genetic or a combination.

Story

Thanks for visiting our page!

We will both be running the London Marathon on Sunday 3 October 2021 in support of Microtia UK.

Having played Russian Roulette by entering the ballot over the last few years (safe in the knowledge that nobody ever gets a place in the ballot!), our luck finally ran out came in and we both got places in 2021. Not ideal timing with a newborn but with such slim odds of us both getting places it was obviously meant to be.

Training around sleepless nights (mainly Norma) and breastfeeding (only Norma) has been tough but we are now through the worst of that and so husband and wife will go head to head on the start line on 3 October.

Who will win? Norma has refused pleas to “run it together” and we all know that giving birth leads to significant physiological changes (enlarged heart and increase in blood cells equivalent to a year of hard training at altitude). But, apart from this, there will be no excuses – may the best man / (genetically modified) woman win!

Microtia UK

Microtia UK is a charity dedicated to supporting people affected by microtia: Microtia UK – Microtia UK Home

Microtia is a rare condition which most commonly results in babies being born with underdeveloped ears and hearing loss. It is a charity that we only became aware of when our son Seb was born in November 2020 with unilateral microtia affecting his right ear

Around one in 6,000 babies are born with microtia. Unilateral microtia is most common but around 1 in 10 babies with microtia have both ears affected.

Microtia UK provides support to families affected by the condition, organises events to share research, and works with experts to create a microtia centre of excellence in the UK. Fundraising monies go towards developing research, community development, and education.

Microtia UK has been a great source of information for us along with Great Ormond Street Hospital.
