Story

Like many runners at my club Run Alcester I was inspired by Lizzie Tovey - a partially sighted runner who sadly passed away in December 2020. Although I didn't know Lizzie personally (we only met a couple of times) her running journey was inspiring. Despite her visual impairment, she took up running late and went on to run marathons raising thousands of pounds for charity as well as leading a very fulfilled life. If everyone could be more Lizzie this world would be a much better place. By running the VLM and raising money for British Blind Sport I hope to be a little more Lizzie and contribute to a fantastic local charity who directly help more visually impaired people participate in sport.

British Blind Sport (BBS) is the UK's only national sport and physical activity charity specifically for blind and partially sighted children and adults.

There are more than 2 million people with sight loss in the UK and 350,000 people have sight loss that is severe enough to have a significant impact on their daily lives. People with sight loss are more likely to experience loneliness and nearly half report feeling isolated and cut-off from society. BBS uses the power of sport to change the lives of people with sight loss and support them in leading more active, independent and healthy lives. Only 12% of people with sight loss regularly take part in regular physical activity yet more than 62% want to take part in sport but experience barriers due to their disability. At BBS, we know that physical activity has the huge potential to transform the health and wellbeing of people with sight loss.
