Tom gets to 50 · 8 June 2020

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

I will be giving my 50th Blood Donation on the 8th June and I thought this was a good excuse to raise some money and awareness for a deadly disease that barely anyone knows the signs for.

Between my 49th and 50th blood donation I will be taking part in a number of challenges culminating in a half-marathon on the day before my 50th donation. You can follow my story at tomgetsto50.blogger.com.

Here's what the Sepsis Trust has to say:

Fundraising is at the heart of our fight against sepsis. It raises awareness, and sparks the question: “What is sepsis? In this way, fundraising can help prevent thousands of deaths & unnecessary suffering through knowledge & awareness of the symptoms. It also funds our vital support work, Public Awareness, Educating Health Professionals & helping people adjust to life after sepsis through accessing our Support Group network. We also lobby government to support our cause and makes vital changes in areas such as the NHS.
