Story
Right!! Here we are again......Messrs Hardman, Teague and Dr Hobbs are raising money for the school's charity: "Third Hope"
We're setting off next Friday 19 July 2019 to cycle 750km across The Pyrenees, following a route known as "Raid Pyrenees." We have to complete the route in 100 hours. The route involves 14,600 metres (48,000 feet) of ascent.
Then we're off to Mont Ventoux - the big lump of limestone that the Tour de France riders climb, aka "The Beast of Provence." In one day, we're cycling all 3 routes up and down Ventoux = 167km plus, 4700 metres (15,000 feet) of ascent.
We want to raise £12,000
Why are we raising for Third Hope?
Mrs Pollock is now our Director of Admissions. Prior to this role, she was our Head of 6th form. Back in 2012 and 2013, Mrs Pollock spent a month of her summer
holiday out in Uganda working for Third Hope. During the end of the Spring term’s full House Assembly, Mrs Pollock gave a vivid account of the work that Third Hope are engaged in. Third Hope rehabilitates ex-Child Soldiers. 30,000 children were violently abducted from their village homes by the Lord’s Resistance Army,
led by Joseph Kony. The same children were forced to kill their parents and burn their homes so that they had nowhere to return to. They were marched off to bush camps, drugged and brutalised into training as child soldiers. 20 ex-soldiers are now being cared for by Rose-Mary McIntyre.
Rose-Mary used to teach English
at Habs until her PhD work, using the creative arts in trauma therapy, took her to Uganda where she was confronted with the horror outlined above. She gave up
her PhD and she and her husband have dedicated their lives to finding a solution.
Rose-Mary and her husband David, bought 35 acres of bush land in this war-torn area, built a village-style residential home and planted a self-sustaining farm so
that those who managed to escape and return would have somewhere to live, to heal and to rebuild their lives. These are deeply traumatised young men and
women who have experienced unimaginable pain and violence. The centre has recently opened and 20 young ex child soldiers are taking part in the programme.
It costs approximately £1000 per year to sponsor each person on the programme.
Rose-Mary's pioneering programme is attracting international attention from other countries dealing with the humanitarian disaster of using children in conflict.
Mrs Pollock has just returned from Uganda having seen with her very own eyes just how the money we raise is being spent.
The Team Russells Community have already helped us to raise over £8500.......so please dig deep and add Gift Aid!
Thank you!
Forever Team Russells
