Well, I did it!!
The morning of 18th September dawned bright but cold as I made my way to the start in Newcastle City Centre, arriving around 8.30am. I'm not sure I fully realised how momentous the day was to become.
The time passed very quickly and at 10.40am the start gun went off. It was fully 25 minutes later before I crossed the start line but, no matter, I was wearing a microchip so my time did not start until I had crossed the start.
I was feeling really good and began overtaking lots of people. I made excellent progress and covered the first 10 miles in around 1 hour 40 minutes. But .... just after the 10 miles marker I hit "the wall" !! My feet turned to lead and my legs felt like jelly. This feeling soon passed but progress was slower from that point on. The crowd was fantastic and lifted everyone as we approached the finish in South Shields. The finish line was a wonderful sight, I can assure you.
I'm really pleased to have completed the course in a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes and 22 seconds and finished in 27917th place out of 50000 - not bad for a 58 year old, eh !!
I wish to thank my family for their wonderful support and to each and every one of you for supporting my chosen Charity - Cancer Research UK. My original target was £500. I was soon able to increase that to £750 and now, when all money has been collected, it looks like I may have raised over £1000.
Its not too late to donate here - as long as this page is accessible, you can give to Cancer Research UK .... go on !!
Why not visit www.cancerresearchuk.org and find out how you can donate regularly by direct debit. You can give as little as £2 per month .... less than the price of a pint of beer or a glass of wine. It will make a big difference to ongoing research into this dreadful disease.
Many thanks for your support.
Tom
