We fund research to stop prostate cancer killing men

Story

In June of this year I plan to cycle the route of the 1951 Tour de France to raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK. I’m doing this in memory of my Dad who we lost to prostate cancer 10 years ago. I want to help raise awareness about this terrible disease and highlight the amazing research and scientific breakthroughs that are funded by Prostate Cancer UK.

So I decided a good way to do all this was to set myself a challenge! The Tour de France is an annual professional bike race around France. I chose the route from 1951 as it is the year of my Dad’s birth, and that particular year was a gruelling 3000 mile, 26 day slog across the open plains of northern France, though the Massif Central, across the Pyrénées, up through the Alps and north to Paris. I will be riding it as the pros did, a stage a day, starting in Metz on June 1st, finishing at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris on the 26th. Most days I’ll be in the saddle for anything up to 12 hours or more, (the longest stage is over 200miles), this isn’t an organised event, I hope to be joined by friends on a few of the stages but for the most part, it’ll just be me and my bike. And just to be clear, I am a 40 year old amateur cyclist, and definitely not an elite athlete, so this will be a huge challenge for me. Wish me luck!

All and any donations will be gratefully received.

Thank you

Tom
