Tongue & Groove Supporting The Listening Place for 2023 · 31 January 2023

Suicide kills 19 people a day in the UK, but free, effective support is increasingly hard to access. We offer fortnightly 50-minute sessions with a carefully trained volunteer, allowing people to talk openly about their suicidal feelings in a welcoming and completely confidential setting.

Story

A discussion about some song lyrics lead to us talking about suicide amongst the choir and we realised that many of of had lost friends and family in this way. One of our member's family volunteers for The Listening Place and we thought it would be great to support them throughout the year.

In the UK an average of 17 people die by suicide every day, with suicide being the highest cause of death in men under the age of 50 and all adults under 35. Despite this, effective suicide support is hard to find. The Listening Place meets this need through free, face-to-face, non-judgemental suicide support. Support is delivered by highly-trained volunteers and continues for as long as someone needs. Since 2016 the charity has been expanding across London and hopes to eventually offer support to every suicidal person in the capital.
