Why I’m Running
January 2022 marks 100 years of insulin, a drug that has saved the lives of millions of Type 1 diabetics. JDRF are a diabetes charity that exist to make life better for anyone from the Type 1 community and to fund research to find a cure.
Our youngest son Arlo is 12 years old and without insulin injections several times a day, he would not survive.
To celebrate kids like Arlo and to raise sponsorship to fund more research, I am taking part in the JDRF 100 Challenge. I will run 100km (20 laps of a 5k loop), starting at 6am on 13th January 22, continuing through the day and into the evening. This will be electronically measured, timed and shared.
The monotony and discomfort of this endeavour is a nod to the daily challenge faced by children with Type 1 diabetes. The children who work out precisely what they plan to eat, then weigh their food, calculate their carbs and inject an exact amount of insulin before every snack and every meal. They will do this for the rest of their lives to stay alive. I am in awe of their discipline, their positivity and their bravery. They live in hope that one day a cure can be found, so any contribution no matter how small will help towards this goal.
I appreciate you all, Tony x
