The Towersey Foundation is a unique charity providing music therapy in palliative care for people living with life-threatening illnesses. The use of music therapy in palliative care is a comparatively new and specialised field. Professionals working in hospices and special schools are increasingly appreciating what a powerful tool it is in the total care of their patients.

Story

My journey to the London Marathon is an intensely personal one.  My mother has now survived cancer twice and has been in remission for 15 years.

In 1993 following her second brush with the disease, my mother decided that she was alive for a reason - and went searching for it.  She is a highly accomplished musician and music has always had a strong role to play in her life.  When she had been ill she felt that one of the aspects of her life that helped her was her music - and wanted others to feel the benefits of its power.  So in the Autumn of 1993 following a meeting with Dr Colin Lee  Music Therapist in Oxford she decided to ensure that music therapy would be available to as many as possible, initially in the south-west , and in January 1996 the Towersey Foundation was formally consituted and registered.

From a small start on the kitchen table - I still remember the piles of paperwork that used to take over the house - her  dream has grown bigger than I think she ever thought would be possible.  The Towersey Foundation now works with both adults and children across the UK, they have their own offices and 2 part-time administrators, and to date they have provided 14 Music Therapists who work in Hospices around the country, as well developing and supporting Creative Music Therapy Groups in the southwest.  In 2002 Evelyn Glennie OBE put her support to the work by agreeing to become a patron.

My mother's hardwork was formally recognised in 2007 when she was awarded with an MBE.

So to us - really we have the easy bit to do.  To help continue and develop this work all I have to do is run a marathon and all you have to do is click a few buttons and make a pledge.  Music therapy really does make a difference.

Thank you for your support.
