I am running the half marathon in support of St Vincents Hospice Howwood. In 2005 my mum was diagnosed with cancer, after scans 3 days later we were told her cancer was incurable. My mum was 52 never smoked, rarely drank was fit and healthy and one of lifes gorgeous people. Devastated was an understatement. Two days later after this diagnosis a women turned up at our door she was a St Vincents hospice pallative nurse. She sat with us answered all our questions, spoke my mum and me through treatment plans, side effects all the questions we had she answered or tried. This nurse was with my mum through the months she had left and became an integral part in us coping with her illness. The hospice was there for us when we required help getting pain medication right and it also backed away when my mum received the news her tumours had stopped growing so she got a break from treatment for a couple of months allowing her to live a fairly normal life free from the day to day stuff that cancer brought with it. Towards the end when all treatment was failing, my mum was basically bed bound at home, her pallative nurse came in and convinced me(my mum required no convincing) that she needed to go in for respite to the hospice for pain management. This happened immediatley, my mums room was lovely the nurses were amazing the doctors thoughtful and caring, i cannot express how much gratitude I felt for these people for making my mum so comfortable when this awful disease was taking hold. After 2 weeks of been in the hospice thankfully my mum, my best friend passed away. She did so peacefully and with dignity with myself and her sister with her.

The hospice were involved in my mums care from start to finish 17months, they made a difficult time easier on all of us. They are amazing and a very worthwhile cause to support. They need our money to help them continue to support people they way they did my family. I will never ever forget.nxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
