Story
I am running the Great Scottish Run 10k on the 29th September, in memory of my beautiful daughter Rona, who gained her Angel wings on the 4th February 2016.
I carried her for 21 weeks, felt every kick and laboured for 7 hours to bring her into this world, despite the heartbreaking knowledge we would never see her grow up.
Legally, she was never 'born'. On paper she was a 'miscarriage'. Her birth and death are not registered. Legally, she never existed. But as a family, we recognise that she did exist, her name is Rona, we love her and miss her everyday.
Whilst in hospital a midwife told us about The charity SiMBA and gave us a lovely memory box that they had provided. The midwife helped take photos of Rona, as well as hand and footprints with the kits provided. The box also contained a tiny hat, teddy and blanket all knitted by SiMBA volunteers. We dressed Rona in a lovely gown that was also donated. We wrapped Rona in the blanket with some trinkets and the small teddy which were kept with Rona until her funeral. Some went with her, we have the rest, stored in our little box.
I clung to that little box when we left the hospital. It was better than having empty arms.
Last year I completed the Scottish 10k in Edinburgh with my friend Erin and we raised over £1000 between us. This money went towards more memory boxes for grieving families. This year I aim to raise money for the Inverclyde Tree of Tranquility which will give local families somewhere to go and remember their baby in lovely surroundings. Families can have their baby's name engraved on a copper leaf which will form part of the tree.
Most of us know someone who has experienced the loss of a baby. You may have been through it yourself? Gestation and age are irrelevant....a loss is tragic in every circumstance.
