Story

My wonderful Grandma Ruby suffered from dementia for the last 3 years of her life. She had vascular dementia and sadly passed away in September 2019. There is currently no cure for this life changing disease, so me and my mam Lisa are going to walk 13 miles along the historic Hadrians Wall to raise money to find a cure for this heartbreaking disease.

225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes.

A staggering 850,000 people in the UK currently suffer with dementia, which is set to increase to 1.6 million by 2040. 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 suffer with dementia.

Another 7.7 million people will develop dementia around the world every year.

Dementia describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function. These conditions are all usually progressive and eventually severe. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62 per cent of those diagnosed.

Other types of dementia include; vascular dementia affecting 17 per cent of those diagnosed, mixed dementia affecting 10 per cent of those diagnosed. Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. Dementia is a terminal condition.
