Everest Base Camp Trek · 26 March 2011

At Compton Care we believe life with a complex and incurable illness doesn't have to be limiting. We work with patients to inspire, support and encourage them to take charge of their lives - because being alive isn't the same as feeling alive.

Story

Hi all

Thank you for taking the time to visit our justgiving page.

Gina Smith and I (Michelle Price) will be taking on the biggest physical challenges we have ever had to face, and to be honest, not being in the best of shape, it is quite scary!

From 26th March to 13th April 2011, we will be attempting to trek from Lukla, Nepal to the South Base Camp of Mt Everest. ...................(It seemed like a good idea a few months ago over a beer!)

This 12 day extreme trek will see us climb to the top of Kala Patthar, at 5643m, before descending to base camp itself at 5360m.

Not only will we have to endure high mountain paths (I can say that being scared of heights), but there is a great risk of altitude sickness which is very common at these heights.

Just imaging the worst hangover you have ever had in your life, then throw in a persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, fever and you could be coming close to imagining what we could be letting ourselves in for – now see why its scary?

If that wasn't enough 3 months later

From 30th July to 9th August 2011, we will be attempting to climb Mt Kilimanjaro by the less trodden Machame Route.

Towering at 5895m above sea level, Mt kilimanjaro is both the highest point in Africa and the world's highest free standing mountain.

Not only will we have to endure a route that is obviously up, up and more up, and along with all of the same altitude problems that can occur on the Everest Base Camp trip, we will also have to endure temperatures that could be as cold as low -30c with the wind chill - not great for someone who likes their hot water bottle!

The reason why we are putting ourselves through this, other than the fact that we have obviously completely lost our marbles, is to raise funds for Compton Hospice.

Compton Hospice a wonderful charity that cares for people with cancer and other life limiting illnesses, not only looking after the patient but also helping their families through what must be a very difficult time.

The hospice has to raise approximately £4 million a year from the general public to keep providing the wonderful service that it does, and that is why we have pledged to raise £8000.

So please, if you could find it in your hearts to donate, however large or small, we would be very grateful.

Thank you for your time and for your donation.

Love

Gina & Michelle xx
